Happy June! Traditionally, a time for celebrations with family, friends, and those with whom some of us are ready to start a new life.
Nowadays, however, weddings, graduations, and Father’s Day may either be put on hold, or at the very least done in a different way that is considered “safe” for all.
For those who have lost loved ones during the quarantine, there is added pain. Funerals have been curtailed, making the loss of a loved one, and closure, that much more difficult. Yes, these are difficult times that we have to adjust to.
Looking back on Memorial Day, I can’t help but think of those who put their lives on the line for others. So many were dedicated to their core to be of service. Those who served I consider heroes. Thanks to the NY Times for listing the names of heroes over the Memorial Day weekend.
One issue of today is how difficult home-schooling can be. I’ve been told by friends and family how hard it is for those who have to do what teachers do for their children and grandchildren. Especially when they have to stick to a curriculum. On the other hand, during my first social distancing with friends over the Memorial Day weekend, I heard that many people loved teaching more than anything. For example, a lawyer friend spoke fondly of teaching 10-year olds how to ski. And then there was an artist who said his happiest moments were teaching drawing. What we should be honoring are all the teachers who made our lives better in so many ways. And I don’t mean in dollar terms. Rather, honoring the simple act of teaching and caring for others, which is most precious.
Yes, I totally agree that teaching can be wonderful. Indeed, teaching is part of what I do. I began teaching at the beginning of my practice, and to this day teaching is still an important part of my work. Now, I am doing Zoom teaching and loving every moment of it.
